Death of Dalit girls: SC panel summons Moradabad DM, DIG

Moradabad, December, 31 : The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has summoned the District Magistrate and the DIG of Moradabad district among other officials for their explanations in the case relating to the mysterious death of two Dalit sisters on December 18.

The girls were found dead in their house with serious burn injuries.NCSC Chairman P L Punia had visited the mother of the two victims on Wednesday after members of the Commission and National Commission for Safai Karamcharis visited Moradabad to inquire into the matter on December 21.

Punia said, “The team has submitted its report into the death of the two girls — Geeta and Neetu alias Monu. Taking note of the findings in the report, the Commission has summoned the DM, DIG, SP (City), Circle Officer (CO) and the investigating officer (IO) of the case on January 10. The officers have been called for an explanation.”

Punia said he had talked to Rajjo Devi, the mother of the victims. The details narrated by the woman suggested that the girls were set ablaze by a mob while the police claimed that it was the case of suicide, he said.

He said that the Commission would take a stern action if the officials were found responsible for the deaths. Moradabad DIG Ashok Kumar said he was not aware of the Commission’s summons to him or other officials on January 10. The police had registered a case of murder on the complaint of the mother of the victims and the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Vinod Kumar Singh was probing the case, he said.

“The findings of the investigation would only confirm if the girls had committed suicide or it was a case of murder,” the DIG said.

He also said that Rajjo Devi’s son Rakesh, who was wanted in the murder of a businessman Pankaj Gagneja’s wife and daughter and loot at his house on December 9, was arrested on Wednesday. Rakesh’s younger brother Rajesh was arrested on December 10, the DIG said.
