Dalit engineer shot at UP

Lucknow, Novermber, 1 : A Dalit engineer was shot at by three unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants while he was going to report for panchayat poll counting duty in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district. Ashok Kumar Kannaujiya (44), a junior engineer of Mandi Parishad, was shot at by three unidentified youths on a motorcycle at Chotti Bazar in Kotwli area when he was on his way to report for counting duty at Visehwarganj block, police sources said in Lucknow.


The JE, who was hit in the chest, was rushed to the district hospital from where he has been referred to a trauma centre in Lucknow in a serious condition, the sources said.


Official rivalry appears to be the reason behind the attack, they said.


A case has been lodged against three persons, including a junior engineer in the same department Jagdish Rao, Udayveer Singh and Arun Singh on the basis of the victim's statement, police said, adding that Rao had been arrested.


Kannaujiya told police that an inquiry on charges of corruption was being conducted against Rao and contractor Udayveer. He said that the duo suspected that inquiry was ordered on his initiative.
